Sterilizer Quality Assurance

VITA-TECH’s Sterilizer Quality Assurance Program

Assuring Your Sterilizer’s Effectiveness

With the growing awareness and concern about transmission of infectious diseases, it is more important than ever that veterinary clinics be able to prove that their instruments are sterile.

VITA-TECH Laboratories is pleased to introduce a simple and cost-effective way to monitor the performance of your sterilizer.

Sterilization Monitoring Basics
Everyone recognizes the need for thorough sterilization of medical instruments. Sterilizers have built-in gauges which monitor a combination of time, temperature, and pressure. Commonly, a chemical indicator such as heat sensitive autoclave tape is used as an additional precaution.

All of these methods provide presumptive evidence of sterilization, but cannot prove that sterilization has actually occurred (for instance, autoclave tape will change colour once a certain temperature has been achieved, regardless of how long the temperature was maintained).

Biological Indicators
The most reliable method of demonstrating complete sterilization involves the use of biological indicators.

At VITA-TECH, we have been using a biological indicator program to monitor our own sterilizers. We are pleased to extend the program to all veterinary clinics and hospitals. This program will not only give you assurance that your instruments are adequately sterilized, but it will also demonstrate to your clients and peers that you are committed to providing the highest possible standard of care.

Organizations such as the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) recommend the use of biological indicators for monitoring any sterilization process.

Simple Quality Assurance
VITA-TECH’s Sterilizer Quality Assurance Program is simple to use. Once a month, a biological indicator (a sealed vial/strip of Bacillus spores) is placed in the interior of a surgical pack in a regular sterilization load. Afterward, the vial is returned to VITA-TECH for testing. If the bacterial spores have been killed, then adequate sterilization has been achieved, confirming that your sterilizer is functioning properly. If the spores have not been killed and continue to grow, then sterilization has not been achieved. Our laboratory will then contact you promptly and in confidence so that you may make the necessary arrangements to correct the problem. It’s that simple.

What’s included?
Each Sterilizer Quality Assurance package includes:
  • 12 test vials or strips of biological indicators
  • Instructions on the use of the test vials/strips
  • Certificate of Participation

For every spore-negative test analyzed, VITA-TECH will send you a confirmation seal to affix to your Certificate of Participation.
