RATITE - DNA Sexing

Easy Card Instructions:
  1. Write the Bird ID on the card. The best location for blood collection when using the cards is the wing tip. After wiping the area with alcohol, let dry briefly. Note: manure and dirt may affect results.

  2. Use toe nail clippers to clip the wing tip claw short enough to start bleeding. Squeezing the wing with a pumping action will help to speed the blood flow. Ensure toe nail clipper is cleaned and wiped with alcohol between birds.

  3. Allow the blood to bead up. Carefully touch the corner of the card to the blood bead until the blood has soaked up to the dotted line. Repeat for the other corner. Avoid touching the blood spot. Sample only one bird per card.

  4. Ensure the card is completely dry by leaving at room temperature for 30 minutes. Once card is dry place into the envelope provided (only one card per envelope). Avoid stacking the cards together until the blood spots are dry.

  5. Once samples are dried and the cards are in their individual envelopes, the envelopes may be closed and mailed. Ensure ID information is on both the cards and the submission form. Store cards at room temperature in a dry location. Stored cards will be stable for weeks.

Feather Collection (Note: birds must be older than four months of age):
  1. The feathers must be physically plucked. The feather tip (that is attached to the skin) must be present after the feather is plucked (seen as a white tip in emu). Moulted feathers are not satisfactory. Note: manure and dirt may affect results.

  2. The best area to pluck the feathers from is on the side of the chest in front of the wing. Pluck 10 - 15 feathers per bird and place the feathers in a zip lock bag. Sample only one bird's feathers per bag. Mark the bird identification directly on the bag with a permanent marker or with the label provided.

  3. Forward to Vita-Tech Inc. by mail, courier or Canada Post: Express Post & Priority Post. Please note: Prices for feathers, cards and vials are the same. Full Payment + GST per sample must be included.
